Attention Shoppers

In addition to my semi permanent, full time teaching job, I work weekends at a huge retail store. I didn't quit, even after starting my full time teaching job because the people are nice, it appeals my OCD tendencies of folding and refolding clothes, and well the discount is ridiculous. I love me some shopping.

I also have met and helped a lot of really nice customers. One woman in particular seeks me and only me out when she needs help because, "I'm easy to deal with". No one has ever said this about me before, and I think she may be delusional, but I thought it was nice of her regardless.

As it is common in every job, there are a few coworkers that try to make my life miserable. I just want say, "Chill out, stop bossing me around, and realize that you are working retail. We're not saving lives here." These are the people that start having a meltdown when the dressing rooms are exploding with clothes and we're short staffed. Please. Spend a few days teaching seven year olds, then we'll talk stress.

The only thing that significantly ruffles my feathers is when a customer tries on a shitload of clothes, hangs nothing up, and leaves them scattered around the dressing room floor. Now, I get that this occasionally happens when you have one of those "NOTHING FITS" freak outs and run out the door to the McDonald's across the street for a large order of fries. Oh wait, that's just me?

You would be shocked to see how many adult women do this--at least half of all female customers. How can you do this and not be a little embarrassed of yourself. I get that it's not your job to put them away, and I certainly don't expect you to. I get paid the big bucks to do that. Ha. But really, who do you think you are that you can't hang them on the rack provided right outside the fitting room?

What about you? What's your biggest job related pet peeve??

  1. As a massage therapist, I hate it when people come in with stinky feet.

When I was an HR manager, I hated whiney employees who couldn't get their shit together and interviewees who showed up late or called about a job ad WITH OUR ADDRESS IN IT and would say "where are you located?"

  2. I always make sure I hang up my clothes and put them back on the rack! I'm amazed when I see people doing otherwise!

My biggest work related pet peeve - I have kind of a strange job and in the summer, when I have to be outside in uniform, I hate how many people stare. I mean, a uniform isn't really that uncommon, is it?!

  3. I always hang up all my clothes!! Yeah, I'm glad someone notices!

As a salesperson in oilfield, I hate it when people are rude. Or don't realize I'm just doing my job.

  5. Hey! I found you thru Breezy Bride. And this blog cracked me up! (1) i'm glad to say- i hang up my clothes...i'm feeling good about that now. HAHA. (2) i HATE my job. I'm talking tears/migraines several times a week hate it...it's a long story but i'm attempting a blog about it now. Basically they started a new program in April & it's NOT WORKING & making my life MISERABLE. I'm an administrative coordinator but i'm making plans - at age 31 - to go back to school for education. My favorite jobs were with kids, it's all i did for years... but this secretery thing is for the birds. (Not that i think teaching is easy! but maybe just a better plan for my life! we'll see!
    glad to have found you!!

  7. i always hang up my clothes, and most of the time will take them out and put them back where they go, unless the dressing room warden forces me to leave them there lol

...and my biggest pet peeve with my job? The doctors who stick the microphone down their throat and then whisper or mumble, while eating, um'ing, slurping, burping and farting their way through their dictations. ;)

  8. I've done retail before, and was amazed at the same thing!
And my biggest pet peeve...I never understood how nursing = receptionist/maid/waitress. I'm all about being the patient's advocate, and actually have no issues kicking people out of the room that make it tense...but is it really that hard to put your trash in the trash can that is in your room. I've even found dirty diapers in the crib with the baby. Our unit has a very close relationship with Child Protective Services, unfortunately.

  9. That's so rude! I have to wonder what those people do at home when they're trying to find something to wear...

My biggest pet peeve with work, really with anything, is the need to assign blame when something goes wrong. I'm more a "let's just get it fixed" person. Because usually the self-castigation anyone does when they screw up is far worse than anything I would say. Now when they keep screwing up, then I say something!

  10. I always hang up my clothes and put them on the rack outside of the dressing room. I worked retail for a short time in high school so I know what it's like to pick up after a slob in the dressing room.

My pet peever at work is when people call me with a computer problem but they don't have time for me to fix it. I want to ask them why they're calling me if they CAN'T give up their comptuer for 5 mins to see if it can be fixed quickly...
